Radiographic Testing Certificate of Completion

*Beginning in Spring term of 2016 this program is no longer accepting new students. Students who are currently declared in these programs should contact program director Bruce Emerson to develop an academic plan.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Radiographic Testing Certificate of Completion program is a self-directed, outcome-based program designed to prepare students for employment as a radiology inspection technician in a manufacturing environment. The program is offered exclusively at the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center (MATC) at COCC's Redmond Campus. Departmental approval is required for enrollment at the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center.

Radiography involves the use of high energy particles such as X-rays and Gamma rays to expose a part to be inspected. These particles pass through the test sample to detection media of film or digital receivers that become images that can be interpreted and characterized to identify flaws. This work is challenging and great care must be used due to the radiation risks involved.

Building on a strong foundation of mathematics, science and practical skills, students learn about the application of radiography to the field of Non Destructive Testing and Inspection. Students learn:X-ray 1

  • Radiation safety
  • Setup, and calibration of test equipment.
  • Developing and interpretation of X-ray films
  • Use of radioisotopes in field examination of pipelines and other test samples
  • Use of proper techniques and practices to assess data and examine discontinuities in test articles.

All credits required to satisfy the requirements of this Certificate of Completion can also be applied towards the Associate of Applied Science degree in Non Destructive Testing and Inspection.

TRANSFER INFORMATION
This certificate/degree is designed for students planning to enter their chosen career upon graduation. Often only selected credits are considered transferrable to public or private baccalaureate institutions. Prior to starting any MATC program, students are advised to contact the institution they intend to transfer to and identify what credits may be transferable.
