Magnetic Particle / Dye Penetrant Certificate of Completion

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Magnetic Particle/ Dye Penetrant Testing Certificate of Completion program is a self-directed, outcome-based program designed to prepare students for employment as a magnetic particle / dye penetrant inspection technician in a manufacturing environment. The program is offered exclusively at the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center (MATC) at COCC's Redmond Campus. Departmental approval is required for enrollment at the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center.

Magnetic particle inspection involves the application of small magnetically sensitive particles with fluorescing dyes onto the article being tested while in the presence of a magnetic field. The particles group together around potential flaws and allow technicians to more closely examine the indications to determine if they are identifying a defect in the part.

Dye Penetrants are chemical agents that penetrate flaws in a part and become visible to the technician when viewed under the correct lighting conditions.

Building on a strong foundation of mathematics, science and practical skills, students learn about the application of magnetic particles and dye penetrants to the field of NonDestructive Testing and Inspection. Students learn:

Mag Particle 1

Setup, and calibration of test equipment.
Wet and dry magnetic particle techniques
Preparation of samples for dye penetrant application
Use of proper techniques and practices to assess data and examine discontinuities in testarticles.

Dye Penetrant 1

All credits required to satisfy the requirements of this Certificate of Completion can also be applied towards the Associate of Applied Science degree in Non Destructive Testing and Inspection.

TRANSFER INFORMATION
This certificate/degree is designed for students planning to enter their chosen career upon graduation. Often only selected credits are considered transferrable to public or private baccalaureate institutions. Prior to starting any MATC program, students are advised to contact the institution they intend to transfer to and identify what credits may be transferable.
