Explore our tutorials and resources on how to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards when working in specific tools and software.

10 STEPS CLOSER TO WCAG 2.1 AA

Color:

  1. Ensure color contrast ratios are at least 4.5:1. (Use a tool like the WebAim Contrast Checker to verify.)
  2. Don’t rely on color alone to share important information.

Text Formatting:

  1. Use underlining only for links - highlight important points in other ways, like bolding or italics.
  2. Set all fonts to 9pt or larger.
  3. Use a sans serif font (no Times New Roman).

Images:

  1. Place images in Word documents so they are “In Line with Text.”
  2. Add meaningful alt text to images.

Headings and Readability:

  1. Include at least one Heading 1 in Word documents and use more if three pages or longer.
  2. Make sure the reading order in PDFs and PowerPoint decks is correct.

Audio and Video:

  1. Share through a host/player that supports captions and allows the media to be stopped and started by the viewer.
