Our Study Abroad Partnership

Central Oregon Community College has partnered with Barcelona Study Abroad Experience (SAE) to help coordinate travel logistics of the program. This includes arranging international travel, health insurance coverage, and providing housing for students in Barcelona.

COCC will oversee all academic components of the program, and is responsible for the courses offered and grade reporting. The courses are taught entirely in english by COCC Instructor, Patrick Kennelly, who will provide academic guidance and support throughout the trip.

Academic Overview

  • Required Courses
    • Spanish Language Course

    Students will be divided into different classes based on their current Spanish language skills and the number of students in the program. This course is taught by local faculty from Barcelona SAE.

    • SPAN 141: Spanish Life, and Culture

    This course explores the life and culture of Spain and Catalonia through various activities and experiences. Taught by local faculty from Barcelona SAE.

  • General Courses
    • GEOG 101: Intro to Geospatial Science
    • GEOG 211: Cartography
    • GEOG 278: Physical Geography

Program Requirements

 

Eligibility

  • Students must be 18 years or older when the program begins
  • Students must have completed 12 COCC Credits
  • Maintain an overall 2.5 GPA
  • Recommended completion of SPAN 101, 1 year of high school Spanish, or equivalent

Costs

Total Cost: $10,400

Program fees include:

  • Round-trip flight (Portland to Barcelona) and airport transfers.
  • Accommodations: Homestay (with breakfast and dinner) or shared apartments.
  • Spanish Language course: Multiple levels offered.
  • Spanish Life and Culture course: Taught by local and COCC faculty.
  • Cultural activities, excursions and weekend trips within Spain.
  • Unlimited Barcelona metro pass.
  • Comprehensive medical and accident insurance.
  • 24-hour emergency support.

Program fees do not include:

  • COCC tuition and fees for Geography courses only.
  • Textbooks and other learning materials
  • Food and personal expenses beyond provided meals
  • Independent travel within Spain
  • U.S. Passport costs

If more than 14 students attend, program fees are reduced.

Dates and Deadlines

  • March 6, 2025: Deadline for Gilman Foundation Scholarship
  • May 30, 2025: Deadline to apply for Study Abroad
  • June 1, 2025: 20% of program fee due to Barcelona SAE
  • August 1, 2025: Full program fee due. 
  • August/September 2025: Mandatory pre-trip orientation
  • September 22 - December 13, 2025: Term in Barcelona
