Sustainability Curriculum

Overview

As a signatory of the Presidents' Climate Leadership Commitment, Central Oregon Community College recognizes the importance of sustainability literacy. Sustainability curriculum at COCC is designed to increase awareness about how human behaviors affect the interconnected nature of environmental, social and economic systems.

  • Environmental sustainability refers to the conservation and preservation of Earth’s ecosphere (e.g., clean air and water; diversity of plants, animals, insects, etc.).
  • Social sustainability refers to the health and well-being of people (e.g., social equity and access to housing, health care, education, nutrition, etc.).
  • Economic sustainability refers to practices that support long-term economic growth and stability without compromising environmental or social well-being.

COCC has established a number of sustainability curriculum initiatives, including a college-wide sustainability course list, social justice and sustainability focus awards, the Alex Kollar Memorial Scholarship and sustainability curriculum development opportunities for faculty like The Ponderosa Project, CJUSTICE and the Sustainability CAFE.
