Saturday, October 7 - Piñata-Making Workshop
Come celebrate Sopa's 4th anniversary at River's Place. This all-day event begins at noon with local artist Agla leading the piñata-making workshop.

Tuesday, October 17 - Author Emilly Prado
Emilly Prado is a writer, DJ, and educator living in Portland, Oregon with roots in the San Francisco Bay Area and Michoacán, Mexico. She is the author of Funeral for Flaca (Future Tense Books, 2021), an essay collection called, “Utterly vulnerable, bold, and unique,” by Ms. Magazine and a winner of a 2022 Pacific Northwest Book Award, a 2021 bronze winner of the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award in Essays, and several other honors.

Students join us for a workshop led by Emilly where she'll share her journey in higher education as you navigate your journey.

Thursday, October 26 - Film Screening of Paper Children
We will begin with viewing the documentary Paper Children, followed by a Q&A. Film is in Spanish, English subtitles will be available.
Ligh snacks will be provided as well.

Previous Heritage Month Events
For 2021 Central Oregon Community College's (COCC) Latinx program hosted free virtual viewing events in honor of Latinx Heritage Month, including a prerecorded music event celebrating the life, times, and work of three significant Latin and South American women. As well as a traditional pupusa and Chilean sopaipilla cooking demonstrations. View the videos.
"Tres Vidas," a prerecorded ensemble event, was conceived and performed by the Core Ensemble of Florida and celebrates the life, times and work of three significant Latin and South American women. It features the storylines of painter Frida Kahlo of Mexico, peasant activist Rufina Amaya of El Salvador and poet Alfonsina Storni of Argentina, presented with popular folk songs from those countries. Email latinx@cocc.edu to receive a study guide and the viewing link, valid from Oct. 19-23.
Latinx Heritage Month takes place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, but COCC's celebration stretches through October due to fall term timing. This time is meant for recognition, education and a time to celebrate Latino, Latina, Latine and Latinx identities, culture, and history. The dates of recognition correlate to historical events across Latin American countries. For instance, Sept. 15 is the date that five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua — earned independence from Spain in 1821.
