Engineering and Physics
Why study Engineering and Physics?
With a focus on problem solving and critical thinking — and stoking a general sense of curiosity about the physical world — the Engineering and Physics program at COCC teaches core principles through interactive learning. Teamwork is a hallmark of both programs, where students collaborate on projects, demos, and design-builds while developing essential communication skills.
"The faculty were not only excellent in their fields but were amazing as teachers — something that's not true in every higher academic setting."
Kelsey Harpham, project manager, Alliance for Global Water Adaptation
Set in the College's state-of-the-art Science Center, students can access inspiring academic resources, including advanced lab equipment, glass-walled conference rooms, and cutting-edge educational research. Guest speakers and field trips to local firms and companies add real-world texture to the coursework.
Program-Specific Information
Students pursuing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) career can choose from either an Associate of Science degree with an engineering emphasis or an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree with a focus on physics. Recent data shows that 95% of COCC students have passed the industry-standard Fundamentals of Engineering exam through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying — the national average is in the 60-70% range.
