Networking Lab
COCC Networking Lab provides real-world tech experience
Room 232 in Pioneer Hall seems to have a mind of its own. That's where the Computer and Information Systems program houses its state-of-the-art Networking Lab, an off-domain network that provides practical experience for students. The system, complete with servers, firewalls, routers, and other tech, enables students to learn about everything from maintenance to security.
In addition to accommodating up to 40 workstations — most configured with dual computers, with one tied to the program's standalone network — the lab houses the full rack in an adjacent space. Hardware includes NETLAB pods used for Cisco Certified Network Associate and other network training, as well as virtualization servers to maximize operating systems.
Students get the opportunity to build a cloud-based, small business network, with completely interactive labs — not just simulations. "We're the first program in Oregon to have a networking lab," says instructor Dan Alberghetti. "And when you open up the 'hood,' it gets pretty exciting."
