Multiplication Rectangles
Multiplication can be modeled in a variety of ways. You were probably first introduced to multiplication as a shortcut for repeated addition. 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 can be written at 4 X 3 and thought of as 4 sets or groups of 3.
Another model is to think about multiplication as the area in a rectangle. A 3 by 4 rectangle contains 12 squares.
