Before Your Math or Writing Placement Assessment

Review this information to make sure you are ready take the math or writing online Placement Assessment.

What is the COCC Placement Assessment?

The Placement Assessment is one method COCC uses to determine your first math or writing course. Also called the Directed Self-Placement (DSP), this survey asks questions about your academic history, such as high school GPA and last course completed. Based on your responses, the assessment either will place you in a specific math or writing course, or in some cases may direct you to take a skills-based test.

What to Expect

You’ll need your  COCC email address and password to log in.

The Placement Assessment is untimed. It typically takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete it. In some cases, you may be directed to take a skills-based math or writing test.

You don’t need to study. You will be asked questions about your academic history.

The assessment may not transfer to another college or program. If you want to transfer the results to another institution, check with that institution before taking this assessment.

You can only take this assessment once, so make sure this is a good time!

If you are currently taking high school or college classes, we recommend taking the online DSP survey closer to the end of your current classes so you can provide up-to-date answers on the DSP. Once you complete the DSP, your answers cannot be changed or updated.
