Barcelona is the exciting upcoming destination for COCC students, with a central location in Europe, mild Mediterranean climate, renowned soccer team, and an international student scene. Learning opportunities abound in the Catalonian cuisine and culture, Roman ruins, rich art museums, historical churches and capricious architecture.

With 4 million people in the metropolitan area (1.6 million in the city), Barcelona is Spain's second largest city after Madrid. It is actually more cosmopolitan and European, even though it also serves as capital of the traditional region of Catalonia.

Barcelona is charming for the vast diversity of its neighborhoods: the rambling alleys of the Gothic Quarter, the grand nineteenth-century boulevards, and the pedestrian Ramblas, which is a world of its own by day or by night, from the elegant shops and cafés to the robust markets to the rough-and-tumble harbor.

Barcelona is home to Antoni Gaudi's fanciful Sagrada Familia church and Parc Guell, which epitomizes the Art Nouveau of Modernisme, as well as major museums featuring modernists Miro and Picasso, Catalan art, and a lively maritime history of six hundred years.

Everywhere, the modern competes with the ancient—even the fourteenth century cathedral boasts a nineteenth-century neo-Gothic faade. The Castle of the Mount of Jews overlooks the 1992 Olympic Stadium, where the U.S. Dream Team earned basketball gold. Barcelona students can indulge themselves in a rich cultural tapestry of art and history, while also trying the tapas and the mile-long manmade urban beach.

Fountain in Barcelona This opportunity is available to all students who are 18 years old when the program begins and have earned at least 12 college credits with a GPA of at least 2.5.

Non-traditional participants are also welcome. Participation in the course of study offered is expected.

Participants should have completed SPAN 101, a recent year of high school Spanish, or the equivalent.

You will earn COCC transferable credits while studying in Barcelona.

Live with a family in Barcelona:

Students may live in vetted homestays which include daily breakfast and dinner or in shared apartments. Homestays may be individual or shared with other students from COCC. This is great way to deepen your acculturation, speed up your language acquisition and really get a local experience.

Gilman International Scholarship Program

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships award up to $5,000 to students who are currently receiving a Pell Grant for their education at COCC. Our last survey showed that one in three applicants receives an award, which averages $3,500. Please visit https://www.gilmanscholarship.org for more information.

The March 2025 deadline application is for applicants whose programs or internships start between May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026. Applications will open in mid-January 2025 for this deadline.

Students interested in other study abroad resources should check with COCC Financial Aid, at the Barber Library, and elsewhere for further information about new and continuing scholarships. Moneygeek, a private firm, offers information on study abroad scholarships on their website as well.
