Presidential Candidate: Talia Stockwell
Major: Economics
Why are you running for ASCOCC President? While serving as ASCOCC's Director of Financial Affairs, I have witnessed firsthand the impact that student government has had on our college community. From stocking the food pantry to supporting student clubs, ASCOCC has worked tirelessly to uplift our fellow students. I am running for ASCOCC President because it gives me the opportunity to grow and support this program further.
How will you represent COCC students and ensure their voices are heard? As ASCOCC President, I will take initiative to foster open dialogue with COCC's broad student body. This means taking action to reach students where they are. Far too often, the concerns of our online, branch campus, and non-traditional students are neglected due to lack of access. There is no one size fits all strategy for connection, and I hope to employ a flexible and inclusive initiative to reach these underrepresented groups.
What would your main priorities be if you were elected President? I hope to play to ASCOCC'S strengths by focusing on growing student engagement and community. As a council member this past year, I established and led the unofficial "Fun Committee," a task force of several ASCOCC members dedicated to providing fun events to the Bend campus and beyond. Some examples include our inaugural event, a COCC themed trivia night, as well as our upcoming club mixer.
In addition to ASCOCC hosted events, I hope to expand our support of our student clubs. As the Asian Cultures Club president, I am keenly aware of the challenges faced by clubs, especially in regards to gaining membership, obtaining funding, and understanding club policy. As ASCOCC President, I hope to use my club leadership experience to better support the diverse array of clubs we have on campus. Importantly, it is necessary to streamline ASCOCC's role in promoting clubs, as well as providing them the necessary resources to thrive.
What excites you about the role of ASCOCC President? While this past year saw me take on a more back of the house role, the opportunity of presidency offers me the chance to implement much needed changes. As an institution designed to serve the student body, ASCOCC must take an active role in creating the community and engagement we want to see. I am excited to have a chance to push ASCOCC in this new direction.
Presidential Candidate: Thomas Wrisley
Major: Political science
Why are you running for ASCOCC President? I am running for ASCOCC President for one simple reason: service. Central Oregon Community College is a special place with supportive staff and students. COCC has provided so much for me in both academic and personal support and serving as ASCOCC President is how I have given back. Not only is being a part of contributing to this campus’ culture rewarding in itself, but it also presents meaningful growth opportunities that hone my problem-solving and interpersonal skills, thus making me a more capable servant to our campus.
How will you represent COCC students and ensure their voices are heard? Active listening and meaningful outreach are my main tools in ensuring students are heard. Under my leadership, ASCOCC has seen a meaningful increase in student engagement. Students are regularly invited and attend meeting of the student council, clubs are supported in event planning and funding, and at the start of this year, ASCOCC got wonderful feedback through the white board outside our office in Campus Center Room 207. Student government took the initiative to reach students under my leadership, rather than depending on students to reach out to us.
What would your main priorities be if you were elected President? During my first term, I focused on modernizing ASCOCC’s policies and procedures. The ASCOCC Constitution had some important updates, and significant progress was made on updating the ASCOCC Bylaws, which hadn’t been touched since before COVID. Various procedures and lines of communication were fixed to make ASCOCC more efficient and accountable.
During my second term, I’d like to focus on student wellness. If re-elected, I will focus my second (and final) term on identifying gaps in student wellness, and bolstering support for those services. This will include more outreach and publicity for existing services, and possibly forming new partnerships and programs to support student wellbeing.
What excites you about the role of ASCOCC President? To me, being ASCOCC President isn’t about padding a resume or collecting a title, it’s about providing leadership that is experienced, values-based and community-focused. This experience includes being appointed and elected to public office and political advocacy to support LGBTQ rights with private organizations. As President, I want to provide effective and responsive governance that is resourceful, dependable and reflects accountability, integrity and invites collaboration.
