Ribes cereum - wax currant

Wax Currant
Ribes cereum
Family: GROSSULARIACEAE

In the Pacific northwest region, the genus Ribes includes currants and gooseberries; the latter are distinguished as having spines or prickles. What does that tell you about the armament of this species? Gooseberries tend to be more palatable than currants and can be used for jams and jellies. Even with enticing bright red fruit, the flavor may not be enjoyable (unless you are a hungry quail!)
