Art Exhibition: The Best of High Desert Art League The COCC Barber Library is displaying the work of the High Desert Art League from September 16 through December 6, 2026.  “The Best of the High Desert Art League” highlights premier work by the League’s professional artists. Most artists will be present for a reception on Thursday, September 24 from 4:-5:30 p.m., with free parking and refreshments.

This show includes works by Pamela Beaverson, Helen Brown, Barbara Hudler Cella, Jan Dow, Janet Frost, Liz Haberman, Jacqueline Newbold, Vivian C. Olsen, Janice Rhodes, Rebecca Sentgeorge and Joren Traveller.

“This amazing group of professional artists continues to create the most incredible work!”, explains League President Janet Frost. “Although many of us are affiliated with various galleries and associations, High Desert Art League shows pull our creative wonders together into one show as a unique collective exhibit. The Barber Library’s Rotunda is a wonderful venue for our show, with easy accessibility and a welcoming beautiful exhibit space.

Latinx Heritage Month also includes in-person book discussions of “Solito,” an American Book Award-winning memoir of a child’s 3,000-mile migration from El Salvador, Oct. 20 at COCC Prineville and Oct. 22 at COCC Madras, and readings by award-winning poet and acclaimed performer José Olivarez, Oct. 27 at the Bend campus. Latinx Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, though COCC’s events are held entirely in October due to the college’s late-September fall term start.

The community ride with Vámonos Outside begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Shevlin Park; participants can arrive at 10 a.m. for “Ask a Mechanico” help and to learn some bike safety tips. Vámonos Outside will provide bikes and helmets, including for children, plus snacks and community-building activities. Registration required.

Javier Zamora’s “Solito,” a New York Times bestseller that recounts his 3,000-mile journey from El Salvador to the U.S. border — at the age of 9, without his parents — is the focus of two book discussions: at the COCC Prineville campus on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and at the Madras campus on Thursday, Oct. 22, both from 5:30-7 p.m. Registration required, with some books available for loan; contact cwalker2@cocc.edu to register.

José Olivarez, whose poetry explores themes of immigration and identity, will be reading works, sharing perspective and hosting a Q&A from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Wille Hall on the Bend campus. No registration required.

This past academic year, nearly 15% of COCC’s credit-seeking students identified as Latinx. “As this demographic continues to grow, we are excited to celebrate Latinx culture and invite all of our students and community to join us,” said Christy Walker, dean of equity and well-being.

Goudy’s presentation, part of the We X Rural Change Project Speaker Series, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Madras campus. It examines the Doctrine of Discovery, a centuries-old legal and religious framework used to justify colonization, land dispossession and the systematic denial of human rights to Indigenous Peoples. Following the presentation, participants can join community-building circles centered on tribal sovereignty and environmental sustainability. Space is limited to the first 100 people.

“First Descent: Kayaking the Klamath” follows young Indigenous paddlers on a historic journey from the Klamath River’s headwaters to the Pacific. The screening is Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Tower Theatre in Bend. Doors open at 6 p.m., the film begins at 7 p.m., and a Q&A with people involved in the film follows. The screening is free, but tickets are required. Please visit the Tower Theatre to register for the screening.

Artist Speakthunder will present on bringing Indigenous art into modern design and concepts, demonstrating his craft with a variety of materials, from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, in Building 3, Room 309, at the Redmond campus. No registration required.

The First Nations Student Union Club will host a Friends-giving/Native American Dinner Celebration from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Coats Campus Center dining hall on the Bend campus. The menu features traditional and contemporary Native foods, including frybread, prepared and served by Sodexo. Cost is $12 for COCC students (or a meal card) and $14.25 for community members.

Everlee McCabe and Justine Lowry will lead a hands-on frybread-making class from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, in the kitchen at the Prineville campus. Participants are encouraged to bring an apron and an appetite. The class is free; space is limited to the first 20 people.
