Max Bennett
Head Coach, Men's Club Rugby
Email: mbennett5@cocc.edu
Before college, Max Bennett had never played a contact sport. He was pretty skinny, not particularly fast, and did't see himself as the rugby type. But his friends convinced him to give it a try, and that decision changed his life. Through rugby, Max discovered strengths he didn't know he had, including toughness, discipline, grit, and self-confidence. As a founding member of the COCC Rugby Club and the inaugural team captain in 2012, Max brings a deep connection and passion for the program. Now, as Head Coach, his mission is to help other young players experience these same life-changing benefits.
To prospective players:
"Playing rugby in college is, in my opinion, the best decision any college student can make. By joining the COCC team, you're becoming part of something special - a community of hundreds of COCC Rugby alumni, many of whom still live in Central Oregon and remain closely connected. It's not just a sport; rugby is a local and global brotherhood that offers lifelong friendships and a supportive network."
Peter Quies
Co-Head Coach, Men's Club Soccer
Email: peter.quies@gmail.com
Peter is a certified teacher who has over 10 years of experience as a full-time professional
coach, including four years as an NCAA D1 coach and as a staff member for Olympic
Development Programs for California Youth Soccer Association (California-South) and
United States Youth Soccer (Region IV). Peter's mentors have included Sigi Schmid
(coach of Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy) and Afshin Ghotbi (coach of Chinese Super
League team Shijiazhuang Ever Bright, head coach for Iran, and assistant for US and
South Korean World Cup Teams).
Peter is a teacher at heart and continues to inquire into how players learn best.
He believes that the psychological and social lessons learned through soccer are the
most important elements of the game for young players as they transcend the field
and have the power to help create healthy, strong, evolved human beings capable of
making positive change in the world. Peter also has not forgotten that soccer is about
"play" and should provide avenues to joy and transcendent experiences. That said,
a number of Peter's players have gone on to play professional soccer.
Peter was one of the first American players to play in Europe. In Germany, he played for a club that won the U19 national championship before going on to play professionally. He also played professionally in Costa Rica and has been a teammate of World Cup players from numerous countries.
Peter spent five months studying coaching full-time at one of the German Soccer Federation's schools. He also participated in portions of the Federation's "A" license coaching course during his playing days. He has completed an English FA coaching course and holds a United States Soccer Federation "A" coaching license.
