Latinx Heritage Month - Mes De La Herencia Latina

2024 Latinx Heritage Month Events

Latinx Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15, a period chosen to honor the independence days of several Central American and South American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15, Mexico on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21.

Originally the celebration was established as a week-long celebration by President Johnson in 1968. President Reagan expanded it to a month in 1988 to allow for a more comprehensive recognition of the significant contributions Hispanic and Latinx Americans have made to the United States.

We are proud to offer to you a unique opportunity to learn, explore, and celebrate the rich diversity of the Latinx culture. Throughout history, Latinx activists, writers, scientists, educators, musicians, athletes, entrepreneurs, and artists have left a solid legacy that continues to shape and enrich our nation. Join us in celebrating the Latinx Heritage at our upcoming events this month.

Because students do not start class until the end of September, at COCC we celebrate the whole month of October!

2022 Latinx Heritage Month Events

Previous Heritage Month Events

For 2021 Central Oregon Community College's (COCC) Latinx program hosted free virtual viewing events in honor of Latinx Heritage Month, including a prerecorded music event celebrating the life, times, and work of three significant Latin and South American women. As well as a traditional pupusa and Chilean sopaipilla cooking demonstrations. View the videos.

"Tres Vidas," a prerecorded ensemble event, was conceived and performed by the Core Ensemble of Florida and celebrates the life, times and work of three significant Latin and South American women. It features the storylines of painter Frida Kahlo of Mexico, peasant activist Rufina Amaya of El Salvador and poet Alfonsina Storni of Argentina, presented with popular folk songs from those countries. Email latinx@cocc.edu to receive a study guide and the viewing link, valid from Oct. 19-23.

Tres Vidas

Latinx Heritage Month takes place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, but COCC's celebration stretches through October due to fall term timing. This time is meant for recognition, education and a time to celebrate Latino, Latina, Latine and Latinx identities, culture, and history. The dates of recognition correlate to historical events across Latin American countries. For instance, Sept. 15 is the date that five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua — earned independence from Spain in 1821.
